In-Person Class: Studio Still-Life Composition in Ink

Explore how to form an image in ink inspired by principles used by painter and printmaker Arthur Wesley Dow, whose approach to design, composition, and expression played a critical role in Georgia O’Keeffe’s artistic development. 

Class will begin in front of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, where participants will join instructor Gal Senderowitsch for a short walk through the galleries to gather inspiration and to explore works by O’Keeffe that relate to the class theme. Then, the group will walk to the Museum’s classroom space to begin the hands-on portion of the class.

Once in the classroom, participants will learn about Dow’s design philosophies and how he was inspired by Japanese printmaking. Students will also learn about his application of “notan,” a Japanese term for light-dark harmony that Dow considered a vital element for creating compositional balance. Finally, after a demonstration of brush, paper, and ink handling from the instructor, participants will explore capturing harmony in their own ink works by working from a still-life arrangement set up in the classroom.

This class is suitable for all levels, from beginner to advanced, and all supplies will be provided.

This class is suitable for youth ages 12 and up. Children are welcome to participate alongside their adults.

Weather permitting, this program will begin at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, then take place at the Research Center Garden, 123 Grant Ave & 135 Grant Ave, Santa Fe, NM. Registrants will be notified 24 hours in advance if the lesson is to be canceled.

About the Instructor

Gal Senderowitsch is a Santa Fe-based multimedia artist who draws inspiration from nature, dreams, and the human condition. She graduated with her BFA in printmaking from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and is currently pursuing her MA in Art Therapy in Santa Fe, NM. Her media of choice are aqueous media, monotypes, woodcut printmaking, charcoal and pastel drawing, and oil painting. She is a recipient of various awards from prestigious art institutions and groups in Philadelphia, including the Print Center, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Color Print Society. Gal has exhibited her work in various locations, such as Abington Art Center, Chestnut Hill Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Plastic Club, Old City Jewish Arts Center, Greenpoint Gallery, and the Canvas in New York City.
