Upcoming Exhibits Show O’Keeffe in New Ways: In Color and In the Landscape
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — March 17, 2022 (Santa Fe, NM) — Two spring features at the
Georgia O’Keeffe Museum offer striking views of its namesake artist in some of her most natural
surroundings. Georgia O’Keeffe, A Life Well Lived: Photos by Malcolm Varon will showcase color
photographs of the artist in her homes and O’Keeffe in the Landscape, which will be on display at the Welcome Center in Abiquiú, will delight visitors with displays of O’Keeffe’s personal camping gear.
Malcolm Varon was Georgia O’Keeffe’s art photographer of choice –- capturing not only the color, but also, as she said, the “feeling” of her paintings. He was at her home in Northern New Mexico in the summer of 1977 when O’Keeffe asked Varon to photograph her to accompany an upcoming article. The exhibition will feature 23 of Varon’s never before-published photograph from this shoot, candidly capturing O’Keeffe’s life at her Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch homes. A catalogue of color photographs by Malcolm Varon, published by the University of New Mexico Press, accompanies the exhibition. It includes a foreword by Cody Hartley, Director of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, and an introduction by Barbara Buhler Lynes, the leading authority on Georgia O’Keeffe.
“…through O’Keeffe’s work we can see she had a relationship with and reverence for nature."
O’Keeffe in the Landscape will be the debut exhibition for the Welcome Center in Abiquiú. Camping gear used by O’Keeffe during her famous trips to Glen Canyon, Plaza Blanca, and the Bisti Badlands will be on display along with photographs from these trips. Another highlight will
feature the clothing and textiles O’Keeffe wore for camping, including bandanas, boots, and a camping dress, complete with large pockets needed for the artist’s habit of collecting rocks.
“It’s always been a goal to bring an exhibition to the community of Abiquiú, and this one seemed a natural choice,” Giustina Renzoni, Curator of Historic Properties at the Museum, says. “More and more folks are going outside and experiencing outdoor recreation for the first time. They want to have a deeper relationship with nature, and through O’Keeffe’s work we can see she had a relationship with and reverence for nature.”
Georgia O’Keeffe, A Life Well Lived: Photographs by Malcolm Varon will open on April 7, 2022
and will run through October 31, 2022 at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe (217 Johnson Street). O’Keeffe in the Landscape will open on April 19, 2022 and will be on display until April 2, 2023 at the Welcome Center in Abiquiú, New Mexico (21120 US-84).
