Fall Brings Art of Josephine Halvorson to the O’Keeffe

September 24, 2021

The installation is part of the “Contemporary Voices” series on view October 1, 2021 – March 28, 2022.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE— September 24, 2021 (Santa Fe, NM) — As part of its
ongoing Contemporary Voices series the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum will feature works by Josephine Halvorson, the Museum’s first Artist-in Residence. This installation will include
Halvorson’s work after unparalleled access to the Museum’s archives and collection, as well as an immersive, extended experience at O’Keeffe’s home at Ghost Ranch.

“As O’Keeffe would do, with her paintings of individual blossoms, Halvorson invites us to linger upon the overlooked – the ground which we tromp upon but do not see,” says Ariel Plotek, the O’Keeffe’s Curator of Fine Art. “Whether indoors or out-of-doors, Halvorson’s still-life subjects remain resolutely site-specific, rooted in the place she has shared with O’Keeffe.”

Halvorson joined the O’Keeffe in 2019 as the Museum’s first Artist-in-Residence. The artist spent time at the Museum’s sites in Santa Fe and Abiquiú, New Mexico. Much of her experience concentrated on the Ghost Ranch home, where Georgia O’Keeffe executed some of her most iconic paintings.

Halvorson grew up on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where she first studied art on the beaches of Provincetown. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Cooper Union School of Art in New York; and the Yale Norfolk School of Art. She also received her MFA at Columbia University’s School of the Arts. In 2016, Halvorson joined Boston University as Professor of Art and Chair of Graduate Studies in Painting.

Contemporary Voices: Josephine Halvorson will be on view at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in
Santa Fe, October 1, 2021 to March 28, 2022. For general information, and for details about
