Join us for this beginning-to-intermediate level class on atmospheric landscape painting inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s landscapes in watercolor and other mediums. Learn how to create a sense of vastness, depth, and dimension within the pictorial space through a variety of layering techniques with watercolor washes. Through an interactive demonstration on graduated washes with step-by-step guidance by Sudeshna Sengupta, you will explore the expressive possibilities of atmospheric landscapes, inspired by O’Keeffe’s use of color and blended tonal gradation.

Supplies needed for this class:

  • A set of Watercolor (either tubes or half-pans)
  • Watercolor pad or block of Strathmore 400 series or any other brand in any size around 9” x 12” and 12” x 16”
  • A regular 2 pencil (a.k.a. HB) and an eraser
  • Round and Flat Watercolor brushes (synthetic ‘Taklon’ brushes are fine): 3 to 4 Round brushes in the range of Size 8, 10, 12, 14 and 1 Flat brush of 1⁄2” to 1” width
  • Watercolor palette with multiple wells and a larger area to mix paints. A plastic palette works well.
  • Q-tips and paper towel or pieces of cotton rag (cut-up pieces from a clean, used t-shirt works great)
  • Masking tape if a watercolor pad is used instead of a watercolor block
  • 2 to 3 empty glass jars or containers for holding water. Used yogurt containers or wide-mouth smaller glass jars work well
  • Optional: Hair dryer if available
  • Optional: A white wax crayon or a small piece of candle for optional resist techniques
