Throughout her life, Georgia O’Keeffe explored the theme of clouds and skies in her work, often using the subject as a platform for compositional and conceptional innovation. Join Grace Almanza, School and Tour Programs Manager at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, for a deep dive into the Museum’s collection and a selection of O’Keeffe’s paintings that feature clouds and skies. Throughout the talk, Almanza will show how clouds and skies were represented variously throughout O’Keeffe’s career and why this theme is an excellent way to jump into the study of O’Keeffe’s iconic abstractions of the natural world.

From left to right: 1. Horizontal abstract representation of gray matter in bottom 3/4 with strong yellow band which lightens surmounted at very top by blue band. 2. Loose watercolor with bands of horizontal colors: a strip of muddy brown along the bottom, layered above with a bleeding line of reddish to yellow in the middle. Above it turns to purplish-blue dotted with scattered orange areas as if small clouds. 3. View from interior of Abiquiu patio with upper 2/3 of painting devoted to a vast blue sky dotted with a pattern of white clouds. The adobe wall in the lower center has one small turquoise window, and a strong angular shadow crosses the patio from left to right, creating one dark and one light triangle within the rectangle of the building's space.
