Michael Namingha and Georgia O’Keeffe Explore The Black Place

April 26, 2018

The new installment of “Contemporary Voices” examines evolving notions of art and the New Mexican landscape.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—April 26, 2018 (Santa Fe, NM)— April 28 to October 28, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum will showcase The Black Place: Georgia O’Keeffe and Michael Namingha as the newest offering in the Museum’s “Contemporary
Voices” series. Both artists have taken inspiration from the dramatic
landscape of the remote New Mexican area known as “the Black Place,”
and their work will display together to encourage a conversation across
time.

Located in the northwestern reaches of New Mexico, the Black Place was a regular destination for O’Keeffe’s excursions. She found great resonance in its singular landscape, which inspired more than a dozen of her major artworks.

Michael Namingha is a Santa Fe-based, multidisciplinary contemporary artist. Namingha visited the Black Place in 2017, prompting creations that merge drone photography and digital graphics. His work invites viewers to consider the relationship between the site’s fragile beauty, and active resource extractions, such as hydraulic fracturing.

Created in different centuries, but inspired by the same place, comparing Namingha’s artwork to O’Keeffe’s paintings encourages viewers to examine evolving notions of art and the landscape of New Mexico.

The Black Place: Georgia O’Keeffe and Michael Namingha will show at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum April 28, 2018 through October 28, 2018.
A celebration featuring Michael Namingha will coincide with the Museum’s May First Friday on May 4, 2018, 5-7 pm. First Fridays are free for New Mexico residents.
