Fall at the O’Keeffe Puts Photography in Focus
Jo Whaley: Echoes and The Candid Camera
offer new perspectives on O’Keeffe
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—October 2, 2018 (Santa Fe, NM) — Two fall features at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum offer new perspectives on the work and world of its namesake artist. Two installations, Jo Whaley: Echoes and The Candid Camera both examine Georgia O’Keeffe through photography, but from different viewpoints. Echoes focuses on the deliberate beauty of precise composition, while The Candid Camera celebrates the spontaneous moment.
The newest edition in the Museum’s ongoing “Contemporary Voices” series, Jo Whaley: Echoes pairs selected Georgia O’Keeffe paintings with photographs by Santa Fe-based artist Jo Whaley. Like O’Keeffe’s work, Whaley’s images highlight human relationships with nature. Echoes pairs Whaley’s carefully constructed and composed photos with O’Keeffe’s meticulous creations, drawing sharp attention to creative processes.
Highlighting photographic treasures from the Museum’s collection, The Candid Camera features impromptu scenes from O’Keeffe’s personal life caught on film by notable friends, such as Todd Webb and Ansel Adams. “These are photographers that you may know, but not the photos that you’d expect,” says Ariel Plotek, Curator of Fine Art. The Candid Camera is Plotek’s first exhibition at the O’Keeffe Museum. This array of portraits reveals the person behind the persona. “These images capture a feeling that will be familiar to contemporary audiences. We like to visually chronicle our everyday lives, and share these moments with each other,”
with Camera, Todd Webb says Plotek. “Here you will see her at home with her dogs, taking a trip, hanging out with her friends. It draws back the curtain on the carefully-crafted public image.”
Both exhibitions open on November 2, 2018. Echoes runs through Feb. 24, 2018. An opening celebration with Jo Whaley will occur at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s First Friday on Friday, November 2, 2018, from 5-7 pm.
