New Education Outreach Endeavors at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum

September 11, 2019

The Museum introduces its fourth grade programming initiative and free admission for NM educators.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—September 11, 2019 (Santa Fe, NM)— The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum kicks off fall with two new educational outreach initiatives: programming for all Santa Fe fourth grade students, and free admission to the Museum’s Galleries for all of New Mexico’s K-12 educators and administrators with valid ID.

The first endeavor will offer a series of programs for fourth grade classes in Santa Fe, including two school activities and a field trip to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. The programs use Georgia O’Keeffe as a jumping off point to introduce activities related to art and social studies. The subjects align with the state’s common core curriculum for fourth graders, which includes geology and New Mexican history. “We are super excited to be a part of the fourth grade initiative with our local schools,” says Katrina Stacy, Curator of Education and Interpretation. “Art and social studies don’t always get a lot of time in the spotlight, since they Student at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum are not a part of standardized testing. The O’Keeffe programs enhance the subjects the students learn in class, and provides kids with hands-on ways to explore their creativity and learn about their state.” Veronica C. Garcia, Ed.D., the city’s Superintendent of Schools, adds “Having a regular, fully-funded annual enrichment activity that is also strongly rooted in a non-testing-based part of their curriculum is key to both academic and personal fulfillments.” The programs will reach about 1,200 local fourth graders this year, and will launch in the coming weeks. It is supported in part by funding from Thornburg Investment Management.

The O’Keeffe’s free admission local school teachers and administrators is effective immediately. Any New Mexico educator with current educator’s ID will receive entrance to the Museum’s Galleries in Santa Fe. “Georgia O’Keeffe was a teacher for many years, and this acknowledges that important part of her story,” adds Stacy. “More importantly, the free admission is one way for us to thank the people who teach our children in our state. We love our students, and we love our educators.”
