The O’Keeffe Receives Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities
The 4:1 matching grant supports plans for the Museum’s integrated campus development in Santa Fe
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—January 14, 2020 (Santa Fe, NM)— The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum
is honored to be a 2020 recipient of the Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant
from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The award will support future
development for an integrated Museum campus at the O’Keeffe’s sites in downtown Santa Fe,
New Mexico.
“We at the O’Keeffe are grateful for this support from the National Endowment for the Humanities,” said Cody Hartley, Director of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. “Not only does this grant recognize Georgia O’Keeffe’s importance in the larger American story, it will transform the future of our institution. We plan to create a campus at our Santa Fe locations comprised of three sites: a boldly innovative art museum, a research archive and library, and a center for arts education. In the coming months, we look forward to connecting with the city, the greater community, and our neighbors to help us define our project.”
At a morning announcement in the Museum Galleries, NEH Chairman Jon Parrish Peede
announced the Endowment’s annual grants for over 188 projects nationwide. The O’Keeffe will
receive $750,000 in a 4:1 matching grant. As it is a challenge grant, the Museum will fundraise
$3 million from non-federal sources.
The mission of the Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant is to strengthen the
institutional base of the humanities by enabling infrastructure development and capacity building.
The award aims to help institutions secure long-term support for their core activities and expand
efforts to preserve and create access to outstanding humanities materials.
