Throughout her career, trees were an almost constant source of subject matter for O’Keeffe. This is especially true of the paintings she made at Lake George in the 1910s and 1920s, and the paintings she made after 1929 in New Mexico. Her trees often convey seasonal changes in nature, and, particularly in New Mexico, she chose to depict trees as both living and lifeless forms.
