O'Keeffe and New Mexico
January 14, 2006 - February 08, 2006
“O’Keeffe and New Mexico” is an exhibition of photographs
by Maria Chabot of her friend Georgia O’Keeffe, and of O’Keeffe’s
houses at Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu. The exhibition also includes photographs
of some of the landscape configurations that inspired O’Keeffe’s
New Mexico landscape paintings. O’Keeffe purchased the Ghost Ranch
house in 1940 and the Abiquiu house in 1945. Chabot managed the Ghost
Ranch house from 1941 to 1944, and managed the rebuilding of the Abiquiu
house from 1945 to 1949.
Over the years, many professionals photographed O’Keeffe, producing
highly studied representations of the artist that helped shape the severe
and uncompromising image by which she is most generally known. The candid
and spontaneous photographs in “O’Keeffe and New Mexico,” however,
provide rare glimpses of a little-known and very human side of O’Keeffe.
