The Museum’s education and public programs have won praise from parents, educators, and school administrators, as well as awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, New Mexico Arts, and Santa Fe Arts Commission. The Museum provides professional development for teachers by offering workshops and seminars as part of an ongoing professional development program that focuses on arts integration in the classroom as well as quality interdisciplinary arts education and the dynamic potential of museum learning experiences. The Museum staff and education consultants develop standards-based lessons to create arts integrated curriculum using the exhibitions to teach a range of subjects from New Mexico history to language arts and from math to science.
Another initiative of the Museum, the K-Lab and Pre-K Lab programs combine active participation of a kindergarten or preschool class, K-Lab with professional development training to address early childhood literacy and language development through arts learning. Lessons also teach quality art practice in visual and performing arts and are designed to meet the state standards and benchmarks for the arts as well as language arts. Extensions and assessment tools are included in the lessons. Lessons are 1 hour in length. Teachers can debriefed by discussing the lessons and their observations after the students complete the lesson or at an after school in-service.
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum also offers free school group tours for Pre-K through High School classes. To learn more about school tours, click here (link to school group tours content under VisitorInformation/tours/schools)
